"Day Shift," starring Jamie Foxx, is a vampire thriller with lock-and-load ultraviolence. At its heart, though, it's a knowingly sardonic fool of a film, to the point that it's difficult not to find it tolerable, even as you see how wonderfully fluff it is. Unfortunately, it's also a difficult hairstyle. It's full of jaw-dropping action scenes, but it's also full of rules — a bizarre vampire cosmology that's enjoyable until it gets intricate enough to give you a headache, particularly when the rules are enforced as inconsistently as they are here. "Day Shift," directed by J.J. Perry, aspires to be a blood-soaked dessert. This adds taste while simultaneously reducing weight.
Foxx plays Bud Jablonski, a vampire hunter in Los Angeles who spends his days driving around in an old pick-up truck cleaning and servicing swimming pools in the San Fernando Valley. Bud's primary objective is to obtain the $10,000 he requires to pay for his 8-year-old daughter Paige's braces and grade-school fees (Zion Broadnax). (If he doesn't have the money by Monday, the kid will be taken to Florida by his ex-wife, played by Megan Good.) Sounds easy, doesn't it? But "Day Shift," which is an undead action film, a good cop/crazy policeman buddy comedy, and the narrative of a tough but satisfied divorced father on a mission to save his family, is a more twisted one. Audrey (Carla Souza), a seductive vampire real-estate agent, is trying to overrun the valley by converting houses into vampire colonies. Fox, unfortunately for him, Bud is a military veteran who is entirely mercenary when it comes to vampire hunting, too cut-and-dry in his mega-moves. His vampire-hunter-as-functional-tough feel is linked to the film's most flaky and, in some ways, innovative part. Once in the union, you may make a lot of money selling vampire fangs. But, in order to do so, Bud must agree to go on the search with Seth (Dave Franco), a desk jockey who makes sure Bud doesn't break any union rules. He's like the rogue officer sent to ride with Protocol's reckless veteran trasher, only this new youngster is a horror-filled nerd who constantly pees his pants.
