Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022), Benoit Blanc returns, to tell the truth in a brand-new Rian Johnson mystery. The intrepid investigator is discovered in this brand-new adventure at a lavish private home on a Greek island, but there are still many secrets to be solved. Immediately after arriving, Blanc runs into a group of friends who have been invited by billionaire Miles Bron to their annual reunion. 

On the guest list are Miles Andi Brand's old business partner, Claire Debella, the current governor of Connecticut, Lionel Toussaint, fashion designer, and former model Birdie Jay and her devoted helper Peg, influencer Duke Cody and his sidekick girlfriend Whiskey. The best murder mysteries feature characters that each have their own motivations, lies, and secrets. Anyone can be a suspect.

Round two of the Benoit Blanc cinematic universe is bigger, twistier, more lavish, and as wonderful, if not better, than the first outing. Rian Johnson is back with the series he was born to direct. Johnson continues to hone his own interpretation of the whodunit in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, fusing time-honored conventions and aesthetics with contemporary criticism and self-aware, referential humor. Daniel Craig gives what might very well be his best performance to date, going above and above to create a compelling, nuanced figure in Benoit Blanc who belongs in the pantheon of great investigators.

The same is true in Glass Onion, which feels deserving of comparison to the genre's best works by replacing the original's airiness with a funnier one. The best whodunits by Agatha Christie frequently make social commentary and use stereotypes of the popular characters of the day. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, takes aim at economic inequality and class conflict while making targets of the type of over-the-top, comically absurd wealthy individuals with stupid amounts of power we read about every day, will receive the same treatment from Johnson.

If the first movie had a "social justice warrior," a right-wing troll, and a trust fund jerk, Glass Onion finds its archetypes in the senator candidate, the incredibly stupid model-turned-fashion designer who can't stop tweeting racial slurs, the Twitch streamer who advocates for men's rights, the scientist at a major tech company, and the eccentric billionaire. (Wixsite Flixtor) The billionaire's former business partner Janelle Monáe is also present; she is a quiet, confident woman who suffered a serious injustice. 

As they are invited to a private island for a sick murder mystery party that degenerates into anarchy when a genuine murder takes place, the rich idiots in Glass Onion are followed in a plot that was inspired by the amazing cult classic The Last of Sheila. Benoit Blanc, Craig's gentleman sleuth, is fortunately present at the gathering and is the only one who can crack the case.

Glass Onion feels like Johnson is unbound and free to actually deliver strong philosophical jabs, in contrast to the previous Knives Out, which had some moving commentary on immigration and class conflict. The focus of the film is on the influence that money has on people's lives, how frequently we ignore problems because they are inconvenient for us, and how it may lead us to betray both others and ourselves. 

It also demonstrates that having excessive riches doesn't make you special or even intelligent. Its topics and the script's strategy for dealing with them may at times appear overly populist and lifted straight from Twitter, but it still works, especially when Johnson turns the film's more somber scenes into hilarious comedy. The humor is a little more inclusive this time around, and the jokes come up more frequently and have a bigger effect.
